Spotlight on Author: Neil Gaiman

At our most recent Book It meeting, we discussed author Neil Gaiman. Some were unfamiliar with his work, but those who were all agreed he's pretty great. So I'm dedicating a special blog post to him. See below for a bio and bibliography, along with information on

Bio
(excerpt from bio on www.neilgaiman.com)
Bestselling author Neil Gaiman has long been one of the top writers in modern comics, as well as writing books for readers of all ages. He is listed in the Dictionary of Literary Biography as one of the top ten living post-modern writers, and is a prolific creator of works of prose, poetry, film, journalism, comics, song lyrics, and drama.

Born and raised in England, Neil Gaiman now lives near Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has somehow reached his forties and still tends to need a haircut.

Books

American Gods (2001)
Shadow is a man with a past. But now he wants nothing more than to live a quiet life with his wife and stay out of trouble. Until he learns that she's been killed in a terrible accident. Flying home for the funeral, as a violent storm rocks the plane, a strange man in the seat next to him introduces himself. The man calls himself Mr. Wednesday, and he knows more about Shadow than is possible. He warns Shadow that a far bigger storm is coming. And from that moment on, nothing will ever be the same.

Anansi Boys (2005)
His past marked by his father's embarrassing taunts and untimely death, Fat Charlie meets the brother he never knew and is introduced to new and exciting ways to spend his time. For Charlie's dad was Anansi, a trickster god, the spider-god--and his brother is following in Dear Old Dad's footsteps.

Graveyard Book (2008)
Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead. There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy--an ancient Indigo Man beneath the hill, a gateway to a desert leading to an abandoned city of ghouls, the strange and terrible menace of the Sleer. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack--who has already killed Bod's family

These are just the books we discussed at the meeting -- feel free to comment if you have other titles to suggest.

American Gods will be having it's 10th Anniversary next year, and apparently there is a big to-do planned at the House on the Rock. I couldn't find much info on the event, so if you have any insight on that, post a comment and let us know! It would be a fun Book It field trip for us!

And of course, Neil Gaiman's own website is chock-full of information and fun: www.neilgaiman.com.
